Ingredients
Herbs. We used parsley, dill, thyme, and basil for this dip but use what you have and what you like. While this is much better with fresh herbs, you can use dried in a pinch. Just use about ⅓ as much.
Lemon juice. Again, fresh lemon juice does make a difference to this dip. In a pinch use bottled, just make sure it is pure lemon juice with no additives.
Our base is Greek yogurt and sour cream. We love Chobani Greek yogurt but use what you like. NOTE: Not all Greek yogurt is the same, so check the nutritional information if you're concerned about the nutritional value in your yogurt.
Basic Steps for Creamy Herb Dip
- Add the base ingredients to a mixing bowl. We use a mixture of sour cream and Greek yogurt for our base.
- Mix in the chopped herbs. Use a combination of herbs or a single herb. Choose herbs you like! We used parsley, dill, thyme, and basil for this dip.
- Add lemon juice and salt and pepper to taste. A splash of fresh lemon juice helps bring all the flavors together and gives a brightness to the dip. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Favorite Riffs and Substitutions
Herbs and seasoning. Fresh herbs make a difference in this dip! Use whatever herbs you like and have access to. Smell them, taste them, and make sure they will compliment each other. Stir in some fresh minced garlic or garlic powder.
If you must use dried herbs, reduce the total amount of herbs to about 1 Tablespoon.
Base. We love this homemade vegetable dip with a combination of sour cream and Greek yogurt but you can substitute mayonnaise for the yogurt if you like. Use only sour cream or all mayo instead of a combination. We do not recommend using only Greek yogurt as it can be a little overpowering in the dip.
Make this a salad dressing. This is a great veggie dip recipe but also makes a delicious salad dressing. Use as is for a thicker dressing or thin out by adding half-and-half 1 Tablespoon at a time and mixing in between each addition until desired consistency is reached.
Make Ahead Tips
This vegetable dip is great to make ahead of time. It will last in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. Stir before serving to combine any liquid that may have separated during that time. Garnish with some fresh herbs and serve with your favorite veggies!
Saving Leftovers
The FDA recommends discarding any perishable food that has been out at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
If you are within the FDA recommendation this dip will last in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5 to 7 days.
