Only 4 Ingredients
- Puff Pastry. We used frozen puff pastry sheets which can be found in the freezer section of most grocery stores. Thaw according to manufactures instructions. Puff pastry dough can be time consuming to make, so DEFINITE extra credit if you use homemade puff pastry!
- Sugar. We used granulated sugar but you could also use brown sugar.
- Ground Cinnamon. We love cinnamon but adjust the amount up or down to meet your desired flavor.
- Butter. Salted or unsalted butter will both work. We usually use unsalted butter in our baking.

What is Puff Pastry?
Puff pastry is a type of dough known as laminated dough. It is made by layering dough and butter. It is made by alternating layers of dough, butter, and dough which are repeatedly rolled out to create a multilayered dough. When the dough bakes at a significantly high temperature, the moisture in the butter converts to steam causing the layers of dough to puff up. The result is a flaky pastry that is delicious in both sweet and savory dishes.
Why do we roll the puff pastry?
You need to roll the dough a little to smooth out the folds. We like rolling it out even thinner to get a bite that has a good balance of crispy puff pastry with butter, cinnamon, and sugar. We found a thick puff pastry (not rolled) had too much dough for the amount of butter and cinnamon sugar mixture we could put on the dough.
Basic Steps for Making Puff Pastry Twist
- Place thawed puff pastry on surface and roll out.
- Mix cinnamon and sugar together.
- Brush the rolled out puff pastry with melted butter.
- Sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar.
- Cut into strips.
- Twist and place on a lined baking sheet.
- Bake and enjoy!
Forming the twists
We found that while twisting the pastry results in a great looking cinnamon twist, it can be tricky to execute. We found using an un-folded ½ - ¾ inch strip worked best for these puff pastry twists. You can twist the dough as many times as you like by holding one end and rotating the other. Note: The pastry WILL unwind a little as it bakes.
Some Favorite Riffs
- Bake these flat instead of twisting for a puff pastry cinnamon stick. This also saves a little time since you don't have to twist each puff pastry strip.
- Roll each strip up like a cinnamon roll and bake. If you want to roll them, leave about ¼ inch of the edge of the dough without any cinnamon mixture. Brush with butter when rolled and pinch the end into the roll to help hold the shape as it bakes. Also, place them close, but not touching, on the baking sheet.
How to Serve Cinnamon Twists
These cinnamon puff pastry twists are a perfect mid-day snack when you're craving something crunchy and sweet. They're also great as an appetizer to share with family and friends! They make a delicious addition to special occasions like Easter or Mother's Day Brunch, birthday parties, or baby showers. Enjoy them on their own or pair them with a cup of tea of coffee!

Some Common FAQ's
For puff pastry to cook evenly and have a crispy, puffy texture, it requires a relatively high cooking temperature, at least 400°F. If you have undercooked or soggy dough, or if the dough fails to puff up, you can verify the accuracy of your oven's temperature using an oven thermometer to ensure the oven reaches the optimal temperature. If the issue persists, you may need to increase the oven temperature slightly.
Yes. We would make these when we were kids with leftover pie dough. They won't puff up like the puff pastry, but they are a delicious bite!

Notes
To Twist or Not To Twist? These are equally delicious baked flat instead of twisted. Just cut and place on a lined baking sheet.
Cinnamon and Sugar. Adjust the amount of cinnamon and sugar based on what you like. We like cinnamon and find this amount is perfect for that nice cinnamon flavor when the pastry is baked.
These puff pastry straws are best eaten the day they are baked. You can store them in an airtight container on the counter for 1-2 days but they tend to dry out over time. They can be served warm or at room temperature.
